This is reported by RBK-Ukraine referencing the Banking Sector Review by the National Bank of Ukraine (Q3 2024). This information comes from Kontrakty.UA.
According to the National Bank, the network saw the most significant reduction in Donetsk region and Kyiv city.
Throughout the quarter, the total number of employees remained unchanged: it decreased in state banks but increased in private ones. The staff count is 96.1 thousand, with PrivatBank employing 19.8 thousand individuals.
The network of POS-terminals continued to grow. However, from July to September, the increase in the number of terminals was modest compared to previous quarters. State banks even slightly reduced their network for the first time since Q1 2023. The leaders in growth were private banks and PrivatBank (+3.1 thousand and +2.5 thousand respectively). NovaPay expanded its POS-terminal network by 1.9 thousand. The total number now stands at 511 thousand.
State banks have reduced their number of ATMs. The total count is 28.4 thousand, including 17.3 thousand in PrivatBank.
The volume of card payments in stores continues to grow at a rate exceeding 20% per year, both in Ukraine and abroad.
In Q3, the number of active payment cards increased in all banks except for state ones. The most significant growth occurred in PrivatBank and private banks. The number of active cards issued by the only non-bank issuer, NovaPay, also continued to rise. The total number reached 53.6 million.
Sector structure In Q3 2024, 62 banks continued to operate in Ukraine. In September, the small Motor-Bank (0.02% of sector assets) was reclassified from private to state banks due to a court ruling regarding the transfer of assets from a sanctioned individual - the former bank owner Vyacheslav Bohuslaev.
Although there are now seven state banks, their share of net assets remained at 533%, while their share in household funds slightly decreased (by 0.7 percentage points) to 63.4%, primarily due to more active fundraising by private and foreign banks.
It is worth noting that as of October 1, 2024, there were 5,053 active bank branches in Ukraine. Since the beginning of the year, their number has decreased by 85.
The largest number of branches is found in the state-owned Oschadbank – 1,163. State-owned PrivatBank is in second place with 1,113 branches.
