A Russian court has demanded that Google restore access for propaganda channels to the YouTube platform, and the daily penalty continues to increase until this is accomplished.
During the latest court session held on October 28, the judge mentioned that he is dealing with a "case involving many zeros."
The affected parties in this case include the channels "Zvezda," "Channel One," VGTRK (which includes channels like "Russia 1," "Russia 24," etc.), "Parliamentary Television," "Moscow Media," "TV Center," NTV, "GPM Entertainment Television," "Public Television of Russia," "Channel 360," "TRK Petersburg," "Orthodox Television Fund," "National Sports Television Channel," "Technological Company Center," and the YouTube channel of host Margarita Simonyan.
If the court's ruling is not complied with within nine months, a fine of 100,000 rubles will be imposed for each day of non-compliance. This amount doubles weekly until the ruling is fulfilled, with no cap on the total sum.
Another participant in the proceedings noted that in September, the total penalty amount reached nearly 13 decillion (a unit followed by 33 zeros).
It is worth mentioning that the Russian authorities have begun throttling traffic on YouTube to limit access to information for residents of the Russian Federation. Reports suggest that the Kremlin is likely to completely block YouTube in 2024.
