Prices in Poland: How much do basic products cost and are they cheaper than in Ukraine?

In 2024, inflation in Poland increased by 5%, with a notable acceleration in price dynamics observed in October. In contrast, during the same period, inflation in Ukraine reached 8.4%.

What are the prices of products in Poland

For price analysis, we selected one of the most popular retail chains, Biedronka, known for its affordable prices and popularity among both Poles and Ukrainian refugees.

Prices for basic products:

  • bread – starting from 2.49 zlotys for 500 g (24.90 UAH)
  • sugar – 3.99 zlotys per kilogram (39.90 UAH)
  • milk – from 3.29 to 4.79 zlotys per liter (from 32.90 to 47.90 UAH)
  • butter – from 8.49 to 9.99 zlotys for 200 g (from 84.90 to 99.90 UAH)
  • oil – from 5.99 to 8.49 zlotys per liter (from 59.90 to 84.49 UAH)
  • chicken fillet – from 24.80 to 28.99 zlotys per kilogram (from 248 to 289.90 UAH)
  • boneless pork – from 14.99 to 18.94 zlotys per kilogram (from 149.90 to 189.40 UAH)
  • beef (for steak) – 48.99 zlotys per kilogram (499.90 UAH), with fat marbling – 24.90 zlotys (249 UAH)
  • potatoes – from 1.29 to 3.99 zlotys per kilogram (from 12.90 UAH to 39.90 UAH)
  • eggs – from 10.99 to 11.99 zlotys for 10 pieces (from 109.90 to 119.90 UAH)
  • buckwheat – from 9.23 to 14.48 zlotys per kilogram (from 92.30 to 140.48 UAH)
  • apples – from 3.99 zlotys per kilogram (39.90 UAH)

According to the Polish ASM SFA research, the average cost of a consumer basket in Poland in October was 288.99 zlotys (2,889.90 UAH).

It is important to note that prices for these products may vary in different retail chains.

What are the prices for similar products in Ukraine

In October 2024, food prices in Ukraine increased by an average of 0.9%. Vegetables, eggs, oil, apples, and potatoes saw the largest price hikes.

Below is the current cost of basic products in Ukraine, according to the Ministry of Finance.

Prices for basic products:

  • white bread – 34.99 UAH for 650 g
  • sugar – 33.55 UAH per kilogram
  • milk – from 44.20 UAH to 57.90 UAH for 900 ml
  • butter – 91.51 UAH for 200 g
  • oil – 65.20 UAH per liter
  • chicken fillet – 177.33 UAH per kilogram
  • pork (belly) 179.63 UAH and neck 281.95 UAH per kilogram
  • beef – 245.90 UAH per kilogram
  • potatoes – 31.87 UAH per kilogram
  • eggs – from 75.90 UAH to 80.20 UAH for 10 pieces
  • buckwheat – 31.57 UAH per kilogram
  • apples – 30.31 UAH per kilogram

Where are products more expensive

Based on the data provided, prices for chicken fillet are significantly higher in Poland – from 248 to 289.90 UAH per kilogram, while in Ukraine the average price is 177.33 UAH. Buckwheat is also more expensive there – from 92.30 to 140.48 UAH per kilogram, compared to the average price of 31.57 UAH in Ukraine. Eggs are somewhat pricier in Poland – ranging from 109.90 to 119.90 UAH per dozen, as opposed to the Ukrainian price of 75.90 – 80.20 UAH.

However, milk is cheaper in Poland, with prices ranging from 32.90 to 47.90 UAH per liter, while in Ukraine this product is sold for prices from 44.20 UAH to 57.90 UAH for 900 ml. Pork is also significantly cheaper there – from 149.90 to 189.40 UAH, while in Ukraine the price is 179.63 UAH for a kilogram of belly and 281.95 UAH for a kilogram of neck.

Additionally, certain types of potatoes can be purchased in Poland for as low as 12.90 UAH, while the average price in Ukraine is 31.87 UAH. However, at Biedronka, potatoes are also sold for 39.90 UAH.

Recently, we reported that food prices within Ukraine increased by 26.0% over the year, while outside our country, they rose by 11.9%.

Earlier, we mentioned that potato prices in Ukraine have nearly doubled over the year. The current average cost is 31.87 UAH per kilogram, although experts predict an increase to 37 UAH per kilogram by the New Year.
