Zelensky accused Fico of opening an energy front under Kremlin orders.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sharply responded to the threats made by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico regarding the cessation of electricity supplies to our country if the gas transit is not extended after January 1, 2025.

Зеленский упрекнул Фицо в том, что он открыл энергетический фронт по указанию Кремля.

This was stated in Zelensky's latest message on his Telegram channel.

“It seems that Putin has tasked Fico with opening a second energy front against Ukraine at the expense of the Slovak people's interests. This is the only interpretation of Fico's threats to cut off emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine during winter, amidst Russian strikes on our power plants and distribution networks. Ukraine's need for electricity imports arose solely due to Russia's occupation of our Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the deliberate destruction of a significant portion of Ukraine's thermal and hydroelectric generation by Russian missiles and 'Shaheds,'” noted the Ukrainian leader.

He reminded Fico that, firstly, supporting the criminal Russian aggression is utterly immoral. Secondly, Fico's shortsighted policies have already left the Slovak people without compensation for the loss of Russian gas transit and may also deprive them of $200 million annually, which Ukraine pays for imported electricity.

“Yes, importing electricity for rescue is not free, and it requires significant funds from other partners, which can only help lower energy prices for most families,” Zelensky stated.

Slovakia's share in electricity imports to Ukraine is approximately 19%. The Ukrainian government is collaborating with our neighbors in the EU to maintain the necessary volume of electricity supplies.

“Any arbitrary decisions in Bratislava or orders from Moscow to Fico regarding electricity will not halt electricity imports to Ukraine, but they could certainly lead to a rift between the current Slovak government and the European community,” Zelensky reported.
