Following the Russian missile strikes, gas production in Ukraine has decreased by 40%.
In response to this, the country plans to import up to 800 million cubic meters of gas from Europe in February and March to cover the shortfall.
This is reported by
Reuters.
"We could manage without imports this heating season, but attacks on production force us to import gas to compensate for the reduction in domestic output," said an anonymous source from the agency.
Since the invasion in 2022, Russia has already launched numerous missile and drone attacks on Ukraine's energy sector, but in recent weeks it has intensified its assaults on gas fields.
State-owned "Naftogaz" and the major private energy company DTEK stated that in February, Russia attacked and damaged their facilities at least twice.
Before the strikes, Ukraine was producing about 52 million cubic meters of gas per day, while winter consumption ranged from 110 to 140 million cubic meters daily. The deficit was covered by gas storage facilities.
The operator of Ukraine's gas transportation systems reports that the country began increasing gas imports in early February, and since then, volumes have increased nearly tenfold, exceeding 20 million cubic meters per day.
The source and energy officials are not disclosing the current level of gas production. Ukraine primarily uses gas for heating buildings and household needs.
The main gas production facilities in Ukraine are vulnerable to Russian attacks, as they are located in the frontline Kharkiv region and the neighboring Poltava region.
The source indicated that gas reserves in Ukraine's storage facilities are low; however, with the planned imports and domestic gas production, the country should be able to endure the heating season, which typically starts in late October and ends in April, without imposing any restrictions on industry and households.
The source mentioned that Ukraine needs to start gas injection for the winter season 2025/26 in the spring and accumulate around 13 billion cubic meters of gas. At the beginning of the current season, there were 12.9 billion cubic meters of gas in Ukraine's storage.
The source noted that it remains unclear what volume of gas can be imported after March, as this will depend on the level of local production, which is directly affected by the intensity of Russian missile strikes.
Recall that on the night of February 21, 2025 (from 7:00 PM on February 20), the
enemy attacked with 160 strike drones of the Shahed type and various types of imitation drones in the directions: Orel, Bryansk, Kursk, Millerovo, Shatalovo — striking the Odesa region from Crimea.
