The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasized that no country or world leader has the right to negotiate with Russia on behalf of Ukraine.
He noted that any dialogue with the Kremlin is only possible with a coordinated action plan and exclusively from a position of strength.
Zelensky stated this during an online discussion with readers of
Le Parisien regarding the outcomes of his talks with Trump in Paris.
Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine defines its own future, and no other nation or political leader has the right to dictate terms.
“I insist that no leader in the world has the right to negotiate with Putin without Ukraine. We have never delegated this mandate to anyone... It would be unfair if everyone began to dictate how a country should live. The French in France, the Italians in Italy, or the Americans in the USA know what they want for themselves. The same goes for Ukrainians,” the statement reads.
The president also highlighted the importance of creating a peace plan that ensures fair conditions for any dialogue with the Russian side. He pointed out that achieving peace is only possible when Ukraine is strong enough and has guarantees of support from international partners.
“It’s not about the person in front of you. What matters is the state you are in during the negotiations. I don’t think we are in a weak position, but neither are we in a strong one. Are we in NATO? We don’t know. Will we be part of the European Union? Yes, in the future, but when? Sitting down at the negotiating table with Putin under these conditions would mean giving him the right to decide everything in our part of the world. First, we need to create a model, an action plan, or a peace plan—call it what you will. Then we can present it to Putin or, more broadly, to the Russians,” Zelensky explained.
According to the head of state, the current situation requires a clear strategy that guarantees the safety of Ukrainians and long-term stability.
“Who can guarantee that Putin won’t return to Ukraine? Which country will come to our aid with its planes and troops? All we have now are bilateral guarantees from our partners for military and financial support. But if Putin returns with his millions of people, will we defend ourselves again? Will we watch our women and children die? This is not a question of joining NATO; it’s a matter of ensuring our own security,” Zelensky stressed.
We also reported that the special representative for Ukraine and Russia, appointed by Donald Trump, Keith Kellogg, plans to visit
Kiev and several other European capitals in early January.
Previously, retired General Keith Kellogg, who was nominated by elected U.S. President Donald Trump as the special envoy for resolving the Russian-Ukrainian war, stated that he will “tirelessly work for
ensuring peace through strength.”
It is also worth noting that earlier, future national security advisor to elected President Donald Trump, Mike Waltz, mentioned that he has
studied several proposals to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
