The State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) reported suspicions against Alexander Liyev, the former director of one of the departments of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, as well as two leaders of a state enterprise.
They are accused of organizing the supply of defective machine guns for Ukrainian fighters.
According to investigation data, in 2022, 400 certified large-caliber machine guns were supposed to be delivered, but only half of the declared quantity was supplied due to the deal. Instead of quality weapons, the fighters received cheap analogs that lacked labeling, technical documentation, and accompanying papers. As a result, these machine guns proved to be unsuitable for use, could not fire continuously, and quickly malfunctioned.
This scheme led to losses in the state budget exceeding 193 million hryvnias and posed a serious threat to the lives of Ukrainian soldiers. The suspects—a former Ministry of Defense official and the heads of a state enterprise—are charged with embezzlement, abuse of office, and obstructing the lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They are also suspected of official forgery.
They face up to 15 years in prison. It is worth noting that Alexander Liev was already involved in last year's investigation when law enforcement uncovered his connection to the embezzlement of over 1.5 billion hryvnias in the procurement of ammunition for the Armed Forces.
It was previously reported that in the Zaporizhia region,
the deputy chairman of the regional council, his assistant, and a local deputy are to be tried for corruption in medical procurement amounting to 650 thousand hryvnias.
