Everyone loves sausage, which is not surprising as it is a tasty and nutritious product. Many people are likely aware that manufacturers can sell low-quality products or even outright counterfeits. Reported by TSN. This information comes from Kontrakty.UA.

So, how can you avoid making a mistake and choose genuine natural sausage? Since it is quite expensive, few people want to throw their money away. We explain the signs to look for when selecting sausage to avoid purchasing a counterfeit.

How to choose delicious natural sausage without making a mistake

  • Product ingredients. Natural sausage always contains meat: pork, beef, or chicken. Manufacturers also add fat, spices, and other natural components. Low-quality sausage may include a lot of fillers, by-products, artificial flavorings, and preservatives.
  • Appearance. A true fresh product has an appetizing appearance, a multi-layered composition, and a firm texture. The surface of natural sausage should be smooth, without any defects. The color can range from light pink to dark red or brown, depending on the meat preparation technology used for the product. When sliced, high-quality natural sausage reveals distinct layers of meat and fat.
  • Smell. Natural sausage has the aroma and taste of the meat and spices from which it is made. A product with many additives will have an artificial foreign smell. The scent of genuine sausage can be detected from a distance, while a counterfeit lacks such a pronounced aroma.
  • Iodine test. At home, you can check the purchased product for artificial additives. If you apply a little iodine to a piece of sausage and the spot turns blue, the product contains too much starch. If the iodine spot remains brown, the sausage has a sufficient amount of meat and can be considered natural.
