According to Ukrinform, this was reported by EastFruit.
“Yes, just since the beginning of this week, onion prices in Ukraine have decreased by an average of 12%. Today, Ukrainian farmers are selling this product for 7-13 UAH/kg ($0.17-0.31/kg), depending on the quality and volume of the offered batches,” the report states.
Producers believe that the drop in onion prices is linked to a significant deterioration in product quality, as many stored onions were moist, which has led to rapid sprouting in the warm winter conditions.
It is noted that stimulating the sale of substandard products, even through price reductions, is currently not yielding the desired results. Prices for wholesale batches of medium and low-quality onions are already reported to be in the range of 4-6 UAH/kg, but buyer activity in this segment remains low, analysts have indicated.
At the same time, current onion prices in Ukraine are, on average, 12% lower than at the end of February last year. Analysts from the monitoring project believe that by the end of this week, prices in the domestic market in this segment could reach their lowest level in the last four years.
Moreover, major market players are trying to hold back higher quality products for sale in the spring.
As previously reported, the supply of white cabbage in the Ukrainian market has significantly increased, as farmers who had previously refrained from selling in anticipation of further price increases have begun to sell their available stocks of this vegetable due to a rapid decline in quality.
