The Ukrainian delegation informed conference participants about the ecological situation in Ukraine, particularly the consequences of numerous violations by the Russian Federation that led to an environmental disaster following the explosion of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station, pollution of the Seym River, and more.
Delegates called on countries to unite efforts for justice and to hold Russia accountable for environmental crimes, including those related to water resources.
During the general session, a representative of the Ministry of Environmental Protection also presented Ukraine's National Plan for Transboundary Cooperation and Monitoring of Water Resources.
According to Olena Kramarenko, First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, a decision was made during the voting to include a representative from the State Agency of Water Resources of Ukraine in the Water Convention Bureau for the period of 2025-2027.
"This opens up new opportunities for Ukraine to actively participate in transboundary cooperation aimed at the preservation, purification, and monitoring of water resources. Most importantly, we will continue to work towards ensuring that Russia is justly punished for the crimes it has committed against the environment," she noted.
As reported by Ukrinform, in Ukraine, for the first half of 2024, damages amounting to over 21 million UAH have been calculated due to violations of water protection legislation, including pollution of water bodies.
