The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 in Tibet around 9 a.m. local time on Tuesday, January 7.

The earthquake occurred in a mountainous area near the border with Nepal. The epicenter was located in the Tingri region, approximately 380 kilometers from Tibet's capital, Lhasa, and about 23 kilometers from the second-largest city in the Shigatse region, where the Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional residence of the Panchen Lama, is situated.
As a result of the tremors, over a thousand buildings were damaged.
The Ministry of Emergency Management of China reported that around 1,500 firefighters and rescuers have been deployed to search for people trapped under the rubble.

State media noted that after the initial earthquake, there were several aftershocks with magnitudes up to 4.4. These were felt in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, as well as in Bhutan and northern India.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there have been 10 earthquakes in this area with magnitudes of at least 6 in the past century.
As reported by Ukrinform, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Kuril Islands on December 27 of last year.
