He announced this on his Truth Social account, as reported by Ukrinform.
“The idea that BRICS countries are attempting to move away from the dollar while we stand aside and observe is outdated. We intend to demand that these countries commit to not creating a new BRICS currency or supporting any other currency as a substitute for the powerful US dollar; otherwise, they will face a 100% tariff. They should expect to say goodbye to sales (of goods and services – ed.) in the great US economy,” wrote Trump.
He added that there is no chance that BRICS will replace the US dollar in international trade or anywhere else, and any country that attempts to do so should say “hello” to tariffs and “goodbye” to America.
BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia.
As reported by Ukrinform, on November 30, newly elected US President Donald Trump stated that if BRICS members switch to using a currency other than the US dollar for their transactions, the US will impose a 100% tariff on their imports.
The South African government noted that BRICS does not plan to develop a common currency.
The head of the Reserve Bank of India declared that the country is not pursuing a policy of abandoning the dollar and has not made any decisions regarding a BRICS currency.
