The decree cancels previous regulatory documents that required federal agencies to provide assistance to individuals with limited English proficiency, while allowing departments to voluntarily maintain this practice – offering services in other languages.
“The official language is the foundation of a united and cohesive society, and the United States is strengthened by citizens who can freely exchange thoughts in a common language,” the decree states.
According to the document, granting English the status of an official language “will not only simplify communication but also strengthen shared national values and create a more cohesive and effective society.”
More than 30 states have already designated English as the official language.
Over three-quarters of Americans speak only English at home, while about 42 million people in the country consider Spanish their first language, and 3 million consider Chinese.
Trump promised to make English the official language during his election campaign.
As Ukrinform reported, Trump signed a decree on expanding the powers of the Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk, aimed at reducing the costs of federal agencies in the country.
