Starmer believes that only a "protective mechanism" from the U.S. can ensure lasting peace in Ukraine.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged the United States to establish a "protective mechanism" for any future European peacekeepers in Ukraine, emphasizing that this is the only way to secure lasting peace for Kyiv, rather than a temporary ceasefire with Russia.
Стармер считает, что только «защитный механизм» от США способен обеспечить длительный мир в Украине.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was stated by Reuters.

“I am absolutely convinced that we need a lasting peace, not just a ceasefire, and to achieve this, we need security guarantees. What this means and how it looks is clearly a subject for intense discussion,” said Starmer to reporters on his way to the USA.

He believes that a “protective mechanism” from the USA is crucial to prevent Russian leader Vladimir Putin from launching another attack on Ukraine.

“I am concerned that if there is a ceasefire without a protective mechanism, it will simply give him (Putin – ed.) the opportunity to wait and come back again, because his ambitions regarding Ukraine are quite evident, I think, to everyone,” the head of the British government added.

It is noted that on Thursday, Starmer is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.

On his way to Washington, Starmer reiterated that Britain “will play its part” in any peacekeeping role in Ukraine, but will only be able to do so with certain support from the United States.

As Ukrinform reported, yesterday during the first meeting of his cabinet at the White House, Donald Trump stated that the United States is ready to support European countries if they deploy their peacekeepers on Ukrainian territory, but first, an agreement on ending the war must be reached.
