This was stated on Monday in Brussels at the beginning of the EU Foreign Affairs Council by the EU's High Representative, Kaja Kallas, as reported by a correspondent from Ukrinform.
“If you look at the messages coming from the United States, it is clear that the Russian narrative is represented very strongly there,” Kallas noted in response to journalists' questions.
She mentioned that the EU is trying to maintain as much interaction as possible with the new American administration. Tomorrow, the EU's High Representative will visit the United States to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other administration representatives to discuss current issues.
Kallas emphasized the importance of maintaining unity in the EU's positions during negotiations with the U.S., particularly among European leaders who will hold separate meetings with Americans.
In response to a question regarding the exclusion of European representatives and Ukraine from negotiations between the U.S. and Russia concerning peace in Ukraine, the EU's High Representative noted that such participation is essential for achieving any significant outcome.
“No agreement can work without this (involvement of Ukraine and the EU - ed.). This is absolutely clear. You can discuss anything you want with Putin, but when it comes to Europe or Ukraine, Ukraine and Europe also need to agree on these matters. That is why we need to discuss it, no matter what it is about,” added Kallas.
Referring to U.S. leader Donald Trump's statement, who called the President of Ukraine a “dictator without elections,” she remarked that her first impression was that the American leader was mistaken.
“When I first heard about this, I was sure that he (Trump) was wrong and confused two people. Because Putin has not had elections, or there have been no (real - ed.) elections in Russia for 25 years. Zelensky is an elected leader, chosen in free and fair elections. And, of course, during a war, you cannot hold elections. Many countries have provisions in their constitutions stating that you cannot have such elections. Why? Because during elections, you are always fighting against each other, in a situation where you have an external enemy that you need to focus your efforts on,” Kallas stated.
As reported, on February 24, a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council is taking place in Brussels, with the first agenda item being the situation in Ukraine. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha will participate in this topic discussion via teleconference.
On February 24, the day marking the third anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, a visit to Kyiv will be made by the European Commission College and leaders of Euroinstitutions, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, as well as leaders from several European countries.
