Poland is deploying a new military brigade to its border with Belarus.

The newly established 16th Mechanized Brigade of the Polish Army, stationed in the eastern part of the country, will begin its mission to protect the border with Belarus as part of the "Safe Podlasie" operation starting August 1st of this year.

The statement was made by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense of Poland, Mariusz Błaszczak, during his visit to the brigade's deployment site in the village of Zaluskie in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in northeastern Poland, as reported by a Ukrinform correspondent.

“Starting from August 1, the 16th Division will be responsible for securing the Polish-Belarusian border as part of the ‘Safe Podlasie’ operation. It will take command of the operation,” said Błaszczak during a meeting with soldiers of the newly formed brigade that is part of this division.

He inspected the location of the newly established military unit, emphasizing that it will be equipped with modern military technology, including South Korean K2 tanks, Rosomak armored personnel carriers, and Poprad self-propelled anti-aircraft missile systems, among others.

The decision to create the new 16th mechanized brigade within the 16th mechanized division was made in the spring of last year. In less than a year, more than 600 servicemen have joined its ranks.

The ‘Safe Podlasie’ operation to secure the border with Belarus began in August of last year.

In 2022, Poland constructed a barrier on the border with Belarus, standing 5.5 meters high and stretching 186 kilometers long, as well as implementing a modern electronic monitoring system. This was a response to the artificial migration pressure created by Belarus and Russia since the summer of 2021 at the border of Belarus with Poland and the Baltic states.
