Six hours before 4 AM on Tuesday, Obihiro received 82 centimeters of snow, while in the city of Hombetsu, 56 centimeters fell. Both measurements set new records since this data has been tracked.
In Niigata Prefecture and the Hokuriku region, even more snow is expected.
There is also a possibility of heavy snowfall in the low-lying areas of Kyushu and Shikoku regions, where snow is rare.
Blizzards and storms are anticipated in some parts of the country.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warns of heavy snowfall, blizzards, and high waves. The agency also cautioned about the possibility of power outages and urged caution regarding falling trees and avalanche risks.
Additionally, it is recommended to be vigilant about lightning strikes and gusty winds, including tornadoes, as very unstable atmospheric conditions are expected in some areas.
As reported by Ukrinform, in January, powerful snowfalls hit areas along the western coastline, as well as the north and east of the country.
