Lawmakers assert that current sanctions allow the large American company SLB, the world's largest oil service firm, to support the military apparatus of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. They also requested that the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the State Department clarify whether they have sanctioned transactions in which SLB (formerly Schlumberger) imported equipment into Russia worth $17.5 million from August to December of last year.
The Congress's demands emerged following an August investigation by FT, which revealed that SLB continues to expand its operations in Russia, taking advantage of the exit of Western competitors, despite international anti-Russian sanctions due to Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine.
In a letter addressed to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, lawmakers stated that SLB is keeping Putin's military machine "in good shape" by financing the "barbaric invasion of Ukraine."
“We urge you to continue supporting our Ukrainian allies by implementing tougher oil sanctions to effectively limit Putin's profits,” the letter signed by over 50 members of Congress reads.
As reported by Ukrinform, about one-third of tankers that have come under Western sanctions (the U.S., U.K., and EU) continue to transport Russian crude oil, according to Bloomberg.
