This is stated in the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, as reported by Ukrinform.
“The United States has imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese products exported to the U.S. due to the fentanyl issue. China firmly opposes this and emphasizes that there will be no winners in trade and tariff wars. The unilateral imposition of tariffs seriously violates WTO rules and not only fails to resolve the U.S.'s own problems but also harms both sides and the entire world,” the document states.
As noted, China is one of the countries in the world with the strictest and most thorough drug control policies.
“Fentanyl is an American problem, and China, in a spirit of friendship, provides support to the United States in addressing this issue,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
The foreign ministry reminded that at the request of the U.S. in 2019, China was the first country in the world to officially classify fentanyl-like substances as dangerous drugs. Law enforcement agencies in China continue to actively cooperate with their American counterparts in combating illegal drug trafficking and have achieved excellent results.
“The practice of imposing additional tariffs is not constructive and will inevitably undermine future cooperation between the two countries in drug control. China urges the United States to abandon its misguided approach, maintain the achieved level of bilateral cooperation in the fight against drugs, and promote stable, healthy, and sustainable development of Sino-American relations,” the statement emphasizes.
At the same time, it does not mention any potential measures China might take in response to the U.S. increase in tariffs.
As reported by Ukrinform, U.S. President Donald Trump signed orders to impose significant tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China.
In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a 25% tariff on a wide range of American goods.
