It has been established that the suspects were preparing to create an improvised explosive device and detonate it in a crowded location in the capital. The aim was to maximize civilian casualties to instill panic within the society.
To carry out the terrorist act, Russian intelligence remotely recruited a 20-year-old resident of Zaporizhzhia, who was seeking easy earnings through Telegram channels. The agent received detailed instructions from the invaders on how to manufacture the explosive device using readily available components.
According to enemy directives, the perpetrator used two mobile phones that needed to be connected to a detonator with plastic explosive. She was supposed to retrieve the latter from a concealed stash, the geolocation of which the invaders planned to provide the day before the attack.
The suspect was in contact with a staff officer of the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), who was located in a temporarily occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region.
To collaborate with the hostile intelligence service, the agent involved her 26-year-old partner. Before carrying out the attack, both were to complete a control task: to set fire to several units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine's equipment in the Zaporizhzhia area.
Law enforcement officials apprehended both agents in the act during a special operation while they were attempting to ignite a infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) that was on a mission in the southern front.
At the scene, the authorities seized the tools of the crime and mobile phones containing evidence of subversive activities in favor of Russia.
Investigators have charged the enemy accomplices under Part 2 of Article 28 and Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – treason committed by a group of persons in conspiracy during a state of war.
The suspects are currently in custody without the right to bail. They face life imprisonment with asset confiscation.
