This was reported by Reuters citing court documents, as conveyed by Ukrinform.
“The defendant decided in 2020 to exploit his position at the FBI to provide false information about one of the candidates for the presidency of the United States, attempting to influence the election outcome,” prosecutors wrote in their court filing, referring to Joe Biden's 2020 election campaign.
It is noted that prosecutors requested U.S. District Judge Otis Wright in Los Angeles to sentence Smirnov to six years in federal prison. The man's attorneys argued for a four-year prison term for their client.
According to court documents, last month Smirnov, who was one of the key witnesses in the Congressional investigation into the alleged corruption scheme involving U.S. President Joe Biden and his son Hunter, pleaded guilty to providing false testimony after he falsely informed his FBI handler that he was aware of bribes allegedly paid to the Bidens by Burisma Holdings executives.
Smirnov also admitted to evading taxes and penalties amounting to $2.1 million for the period from 2020 to 2022.
Hunter Biden served on the board of Burisma, a position that has drawn the attention of Republican lawmakers for many years.
As reported, in February 2024, law enforcement arrested former FBI informant in the Burisma case Alexander Smirnov at Las Vegas Airport.
Special Prosecutor David Weiss accused Smirnov of lying about the roles of Joe Biden and his son Hunter in the Burisma case.
Smirnov's testimony played a significant role in Republican efforts in Congress to investigate the actions of the President and his family, leading to the initiation of an investigation aimed at impeaching Joe Biden.
