85% of Greenlanders oppose joining the United States.

A recent public opinion survey revealed that 85% of Greenlanders are opposed to their island becoming part of the United States, following Donald Trump's expressed interest in acquiring the semi-autonomous Danish territory.
85% гренландцев не желают присоединяться к США.

This is reported by The Guardian, as conveyed by Ukrinform.

A survey conducted by the Verian sociological company for the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq and the Danish newspaper Berlingske revealed that only 6% of the 497 adult Greenlanders surveyed support joining the U.S., while 9% were undecided.

The survey was conducted from January 22-26, with a margin of error of +/- 3.1%.

The new survey emerged after Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that Europe must "stick together" in light of changing relations with the U.S. When asked if she would speak with Trump again, Frederiksen replied: "The dialogue we have with the Americans takes place through several different channels and levels."

In the past 24 hours, the Danish government has made several statements—particularly regarding defense and combating racism against Greenlanders in Denmark—to reassure both Greenland and the U.S. Other plans announced by Denmark this week include a deal with Greenland and the Faroe Islands worth 14.6 billion kroner ($2 billion) aimed at "enhancing surveillance and asserting sovereignty in the regions." This will involve three new Arctic ships capable of carrying helicopters and drones, two long-range drones that can capture detailed images over great distances, as well as improvements to "satellite capabilities" for monitoring the Arctic and the northern Atlantic.

The Danish government stated that this agreement will also allow more young people in Greenland, which has a population of 57,000, to gain skills to "take responsibility for asserting sovereignty."

As reported by Ukrinform, Trump previously stated that he wants Greenland to be under U.S. control. He noted that he does not rule out the use of force to maintain control over Greenland and the Panama Canal. Trump added that the U.S. should purchase Greenland for "national security" reasons, hinting at threats from Russia and China.

However, over 60% of Americans disapprove of Trump's proposal to buy Greenland, although a majority of his supporters back the idea.

At the same time, Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede stated that the island's residents do not wish to be part of the U.S. but advocate for close cooperation with the United States.
