This year, Ukrainian doctors performed 467 organ transplants.
As reported by Ukrinform, this figure was released by the Ministry of Health on Facebook.
Specifically, 311 kidneys, 93 livers, and 63 hearts were transplanted. Transplants from deceased donors account for over 65%.
It is noted that in 2024, the National Health Service has entered into agreements to provide medical services to patients in need of organ transplants with 40 hospitals.
The highest number of transplants was performed at the First Medical Association of Lviv, the National Scientific Center for Surgery and Transplantology named after O.O. Shalimov, and the Ministry of Health's Heart Institute.
Additionally, 376 hematopoietic stem cell transplants were conducted, including 54 for children. This represents a 15% increase compared to the same period last year. The leaders in this area are the National Cancer Institute, the Cherkasy Clinical Oncology Center, and the Kyiv City Center for Nephrology and Dialysis. This year, the National Scientific Center for Radiation Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine joined the facilities performing stem cell transplants.
Moreover, the National Cancer Institute completed its first allogeneic transplant. Now such surgeries are being conducted in four institutions across Ukraine.
"Despite the challenges of war, Ukrainian doctors continue to perform some of the most complex transplants, including lung transplants. The first such operation was performed in 2021. Furthermore, transplant surgeons in Ukraine are carrying out complex organ transplants, such as heart and kidney, heart and lung, and pancreas and kidney," the Ministry of Health noted.
In total, over the four years during which transplantation has been actively developed in Ukraine, more than 1500 organ transplants have been performed. Currently, over 3,000 patients are awaiting such surgeries.
The ministry reminded that starting from 2024, under the Medical Guarantee Program, the state fully covers the costs of organ transplants.
As Ukrinform reported, in Ukraine, thanks to the consent of five families for posthumous donation, doctors saved 17 lives within two days.
