The elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced that he will appoint his fellow party member and former Senator David Perdue as the U.S. Ambassador to China.

This was reported by The Hill, as conveyed by Ukrinform.

“Tonight, I am announcing that former Senator David Perdue has accepted my offer to be the next U.S. Ambassador to the People's Republic of China,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

He noted that the future ambassador has lived in Hong Kong and Singapore for over 40 years and has spent most of his career working in Asia and China, thus possessing valuable experience for building relations between Washington and Beijing.

“He will play a crucial role in implementing my strategy to support peace in the region and foster productive business relationships with Chinese leaders,” the future president remarked.

Perdue served in the U.S. Senate from 2015 to 2021 and was a member of the Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees.

Prior to this, he held executive positions at major American companies Reebok and Dollar General, spent several years as the managing director of the international clothing company Gitano Group in Singapore, and worked at a subsidiary of Sara Lee Corporation in Hong Kong.

Currently, the position of U.S. Ambassador in Beijing is held by Nicholas Burns.

Perdue is known for having run for Governor of Georgia in 2021 with Trump's support and repeatedly stated during his campaign that if he had been governor during the 2020 presidential election, he would have backed the challenge to the Electoral College results, which were decisive for Joe Biden's victory.

Meanwhile, analysts believe that the role of the ambassador in the tense U.S.-China relations is actually minor, as Beijing will seek direct interaction between the heads of state and their closest advisors to prevent the two countries from engaging in severe confrontation amid the expected escalation of trade disputes and other conflicts following Trump's inauguration.

As reported by Ukrinform, the newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed the candidacy of private billionaire astronaut and business partner of billionaire Elon Musk Jared Isaacman for the position of head of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
