South Korean military officials noted that the balloons primarily contained propaganda leaflets against the South Korean government and posed no threat to the safety of local residents.
The last time North Korea sent out trash-filled balloons was on November 18, and since the end of May, when North Korea initiated its "trash" campaign, it has launched such balloons southward 32 times. Authorities in Pyongyang claim this is a response to the propaganda leaflets against the ruling regime in North Korea, which activists from the South regularly send across the border.
As reported by Ukrinform, South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun stated that North Korean troops deployed in Russia are likely to be used as cannon fodder in dangerous areas of the front.
